What is the Kentucky Derby Schedule?

On the day prior to the Kentucky Derby the track played host to several other races. The highlight race on May 6th, the Friday before the Kentucky Derby, is the Kentucky Oaks. The Kentucky Oaks is a great primer to the Derby Day races on the next day.

The Kentucky Derby race day starts off with a full load of horse races at Churchill Downs at 10:30 AM EST on May 7th. The race best part is before the NBCSN, which should be changing to the Peacock coverage, starts on the day the track will already have 3 races run. However, unlike the crowded grandstands that are visible on the television coverage the crowds will just start to stream in and will not really be settled in for the horse race.

After the Derby coverage starts on NBC their are an additional 4 races that are run from 12:00 PM to the 1:56 PM slot. After the 1:56 PM slot and race is when the national coverage on NBC starts at 2:30 PM EST. After the national coverage on NBC starts up their are an additional 3 races before a major named race starts up,. The first named race that starts up posts at 5:27 PM and it is the Old Forester Turf Classic.

With the next race the post time is not until 6:57 PM EST and that is the Kentucky Derby. However, before the race posts the events that start is at 6:09 PM when the viewers are able to watch the contenders and all of the connections as the horses walk from the barn to the paddock. At 6:37 PM the race has the riders up call as the jockeys and the horses are instructed to take to the track. Then it is time to sing the classic song of “My Old Kentucky Home” at 6:39 PM EST. Then at 6:57 PM the gates should open and the horses are able to take to the track to run the most exciting and lucrative 2 minutes of their lives race.

After the race is the winning horse is draped with the roses and the winning connections are put in place. Then the winner is presented with the Kentucky Derby Trophy. At roughly 7:15 PM ES the winners are sprayed with the champagne that has become a classic for the Kentucky Derby winner. At the end of the Kentucky Derby events Churchill Downs will be getting ready for 2 more races that start up at 7:55 PM.

Super Hi-Five - One of the most challenging normal bets to hit that can land quite a bit of money is the Super Hi-Five. The Super Hi-Five requires you to land the top 5 spots in proper order to win.

The jockey is another popular name in the Kentucky Derby circles and that is Joel Rosario. The last race Epicenter ran in was a win in the Louisiana Derby. In 2022 so far Epicenter has run in 3 races and had a second place finish and 2 first place finishes on the year. The last workout for Epicenter was at Churchill Downs on 4/17/22 in a 5 furlong run and finished 7/26.
Mo Donegal (8/1) - Mo Donegal is coming in as a 3 year old that is owned by Donegal Racing, but is trained by another popular name in the Kentucky Derby circle in Todd A Pletcher. The last race for Mo Donegal was a win on 4/9/22 at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. In 2022 so far Mo Donegal has run in a couple of races only and finished in 1st place and third place so far. Now, in the last workout Mo Donegal had a poor showing at the Churchill Downs track in a 4 furlong workout that seen Mo Donegal finish 49/62 which is definitely not the type of workout that would be expected only a couple of weeks before the Kentucky Derby.
Charge It (20/1) - Charge It is a long shot coming to the Kentucky Derby at 20/1 odds. Charge It is owned by Whisper Farm, LLC and is trained by Todd A Pletcher as well. The jocket that is slated to ride Charge It is Luis Saez who has looked impressive in previous races. Now, the last races for Charge It was the Florida Derby and Charge It finished in second place in the race. In 2022 so far Charge It has only ran in 3 races and has a first place finish and a pair of second place finishes. Now, in the last workout for Charge It was at Churchill Downs and was a 5 furlong race that seen Charge It finish 10/47.
Tawny Port (100/1) - Tawny Port is coming in at some very long odds so far. Peach tree Stable owns Tawny Port and the trainer is Brad H. Cox. The jockey is projected to be Florent Geroux. The last race for Tawny Port ran was at Keeneland and finished 1st in the Stonestreet Lexington Stakes. In 2022, Tawny Port has started in 4 races this year and finished in second and had 2 first place finishes. The last workout for Tawny Port was a 4 furlong run at Churchill Downs and seen Tawny Port finish 21/30.
